Essential Principles of Ecommerce Website Design

Thinking of setting up an online store? If the answer is yes, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Designing an Ecommerce website is slightly different to designing a regular website for your organization. Colors, layout, placement of products, user flow etc should all be considered. The goal of an Ecommerce website is to influence the visitor to make a purchase once he or she is on the website.

Keep the navigation simple. It’s imperative that visitors can find your products quickly, select them and pay for them. Many users who make purchases online are busy and cannot spend time looking for your products. Also ensure that all products have accurate and up-to-date information about them, especially price and availability.

Make sure the purchasing process is as short as possible. On the home page or product page, position your key products in a way that users can easily select them. Display the call-to-action link as clearly as possible in a clearly and visible manner and you may use words like “Buy Now”, “Click here to buy”, “Click here to add to cart” etc.

Make sure your Ecommerce website’s purchasing process has no more than four steps. Ideally your website’s process should be Select Product > Add to Shopping Cart > Online Payment > Checkout. If you make the purchasing process as simple as possible, you will see many customers purchasing items from your store.
